Yes I'm 50!!

Long time no see again, I know.. But I find the occasion of my 50th birthday very appropriate for a glamorous come back.. Turning 50 is not the funniest thing in the world, let's agree on that, but I tried to make it work the best way I could. With an afternoon tea birthday party for girls only!

I decorated the house with balloons and flowers, I made egg and cucumber finger sandwiches with  recipes from the Savoy, I had a variety of teas, coffee and rose bubbly wine, crown shaped cookies, pinks cupcakes that I made myself,  and the most amazing cake ever. And some of my best friends around me, and lots of laughter and .. To make a long story short, it was fun. I enjoyed every minute of it and I think I will make it again, at least twice, I will celebrate my 50th birthday I mean, in the years to come.. xxxxxxxxxxxx

Hosting a bazaar for a friend.

Long time no see but I have the greatest excuse of all... I was busy preparing a bazaar for a dear friend of mine, Stelios Pentarvanis,  who is launching a new line of products, named Spen Basics. Bags, bracelets, t-shirts and small objects of art, all hand made and designed by him who used to work in the media industry as a creative director for a publishing company and now, due to recession is ready to make his next move and at the same time, a new beginning.

You can see all the goof staff in his blog and order them by mail if you like them,  but for now you can take a look at what we did "chez moi" yesterday.

Hosting a bazaar is not an easy thing, trust me, and since I was in charge of the organization and the buffet I had to call in all the favours I could think from friends and family in order to make it happen. My mother dog sited for Droopy -our not so friendly with strangers shar pei- , my son and his friends ran lots of errands and I was lucky and privileged because we ended up with the best macarons you can taste in Athens - as tasty as the ones of Laduree and Pierre Hermes, trust me on that- by Le Petit Macaron, amazing rose bubbly wines from Tsantali and mouthwatering pastry from Fresh.

I added some details, flowers all over - even in the WC- and I had to make room moving furniture around the house but I liked the result. So did the almost 100 people who came by to wish Stelios best of luck and to support his effort.

At the end of the day I was tired - better say exhausted- but really proud and happy. It's nice to see new things happen and to be there for friends and loved ones. And it's even better to feel the care, the hugs, the laughs and the good vibes of supportive and optimist people who do not let them selves drown in crisis and misery but do their best in order to create, to keep up their hope and to stay together in those hard times.

A very yummy goody bag...

I know I promised a post about Ananzoe, but I just received the yummiest goody bag ever so I decided to share my enthusiasm with you. Within it I found a sesame and honey ice cream and a sesame and honey cupcake, along with two olive macarons by Kayak.

Kayak is a Greek ice cream company specialized in gourmet products and they always surprise us with new, interesting tastes. Such as Mastic and Pepper, Tsoureki, Mojito, Pavlova, Rose Loukoum -which is one of my favourites-  and many more. Take a look at their website and you will be amazed by the work done, I'm sure. And if you ever come to Greece, try to taste them for real, I know you're gonna love them!

Hey honey, I'm back!

It's not easy at all to keep up with two blogs, one written in my native language -which is Greek- and one in English, but I decided to give it a try because I'm in the mood of writing these days. So I'm back... And I promise to stay around and share with you all that's going on in my life lately, or at least what I think you might find interesting.

Such as my 24 hours stay at Amanzoe Hotel in Porto Heli few days ago that I will describe you in full details sometime tomorrow. Love and kisses.

Just an other sunny day in Athens...

It may be nearly the end of February but in Athens the weather is warm and sunny. That means that I was able to spend the day outdoors with my friends having coffee at Palia Agora, a cosy cafe-restaurant in Filothei,

then walk my dog around the quiet suburban streets,

and on my way home buy some fresh flowers for my vases...

I do miss London, it's been more than three months that I'm gone, but this glorious sun helps a lot to deal with the nostalgia. (Still counting days though...)

Baking a Strawberry Milkshake Whopper Marshmallow Cake

As I wrote before, baking is one of my favourite things. Whenever I can I take courses, mostly when I'm in London, and I'm thinking about opening an internet store in Athens some day. But for now I just bake in every opportunity and I take photos of the process and then I organize tastings with friends and family so I can have a feedback of what they like and what they don't. Although my most feared and severe critic is my son who, through time has developed a very fine and educated palate. Maybe one day will follow in the footsteps of his father, who is one of the best food and wine critics in Greece.

So, few days ago I decided to try a new recipe that I discovered in Pinterest. I fell in love with the look of the cake, it was pink, and fluffy, and girly and I just had to taste it.

(Here is the original photo as shown on the blog with the recipe.)

I had to wait for some days until I get my hands on the Whoppers that I ordered from Cybercandy,  but then everything went smoothly, even the Swiss meringue that I had never tried before.

(Project in process...  Two different cake batters - a pink and a white one- for two layers of vanilla cake made from scratch, and Swiss meringue with vanilla flavour and light pink colour)

I followed the recipe to the letter and the result was stunning.. And although it was a little too sweet for my taste, I'm pretty sure that it will make an amazing birthday cake for anyone who likes or feels pink.

Present

Back in Athens, I try to make up my mind about what I really want to do next. It's not easy, because recession makes things much more difficult in every aspect of our life, but I try to stay focused on what I need and how I can make it happen. In the mean time, I stay home a lot watching my favourite shows or reading books and magazines, I cook and bake, I often invite friends over, and some nights I go out for dinner or just drinks.

(Our house in Athens. This is the living room where I love to lay on the couch, cocooning..)

(The dining table, ready for my friends...)

Although Greece struggles to tame the worst economic, political and social crisis since the end of World War 2, Athens remains a lively city. Maybe it's the sun that does not allow us to stay grumpy for long, maybe it's our very resistant DNA - who knows really?-  the thing is that the city and its inhabitants insist to keep their lives rolling. And they succeed.

"Spice and rice on ice"... Cocktail at Hama, one of the best places for sushi in town.
